sir,

I beg to bring to your notice the position of Mrs Jones

widow of our member Mr. Edward Jones who was Assistant Earbour

Master of Hong Kong for many years.

Mrs. Jones has shown

us your letters dated 17th and 26th February last, notifying

her that the allowance from the Government of Hong Kong had

ceased.

The late Mr. Edward Jones retired from the position which

he held in Hong Kong after 27 years service, in April 1915 and

unfortunately did not live long to enjoy his pension. By his

totally unexpected death his widow was left in somewhat poor

circumstances, with a family of young children dependent upon

her, and she was made an allowance I understand of £10 per

month from the Hong Kong Government. So far as I am aware

there were no conditions imposed upon Mrs. Jones in respect

of this allowance and having regard especially to the greatly

increased cost of living its suspension has come at a time when

she is ill able to stand the loss which it represents.

M

I sincerely, trust, therefore, that it will be possible

for the Colonial Office to recommend to the Government of Hong

Kong that this allowance should at least be continued for some
